A German blogger has gone viral after reportedly traveling to Africa to recover his stolen smartphone, which he tracked using digital location technology.
The unusual cross-continental journey has sparked widespread debate online about phone theft, tracking apps, and how far someone should go to retrieve a stolen device.
The blogger, from Aachen had his phone stolen. Rather than giving up or simply replacing the device, the German content creator decided to take matters into his own hands. Determined to recover his stolen phone, he reportedly booked a flight to Africa to trace the device’s last known location.
He activated geolocation and discovered that his iPhone was in Africa, 5,000 kilometers away from Germany.
He then promised his Instagram followers that he would fly to Senegal if his post received 10,000 likes.
He ended up getting three times more likes than needed, so he had to keep his promise. The man hitchhiked to Brussels and flew to Dakar.
In Senegal, he was advised to avoid the dangerous area where the phone had been tracked, and the police refused to help due to the inaccurate geolocation.
However, the blogger continued searching with the help of a local resident and soon found his phone in an electronics store.
After a long argument and a threat to report the seller to the authorities for selling stolen goods, the man finally got his iPhone back.
Phone tracking technology, such as GPS and cloud-based location services, has made it easier for victims of smartphone theft to locate their missing devices. However, security experts often advise against personally confronting suspected thieves due to safety concerns
